Aqsa restrictions force thousands into Jerusalem streets for prayer

Thousands of Palestinians performed prayers in the streets and alleyways of the Old City of Jerusalem on Friday after men under the age of 50 were prevented by Israeli authorities from entering the al-Aqsa mosque compound. Hundreds of Israeli border guards, police, and special forces were deployed throughout Jerusalem streets, in addition to at least one drone and a surveillance balloon in the sky as authorities sought to prevent Muslim worshipers from reaching the holy site.

Thousands pray in Jerusalem streets due to Aqsa restrictions

Thousands of Palestinians prayed in the streets around Jerusalem's Old City on Friday as Israel prohibited men under 50 from entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. Israeli forces deployed heavily around East Jerusalem, closing all streets leading to the Old City with iron barriers and police cars. Prayers were held by police barriers in Ras al-Amud, Wadi al-Joz, Saladin Street, and in the alleyways of the Old City.

Al-Aqsa Mosque Under Strict Israeli Measures

The police decided to deny all men, 50 years of age and older, from entering the mosque, while all Palestinians from the West Bank, (those who have work or entry permits to Jerusalem), will not be allowed to enter. In a press release, the Israeli police said that it deployed hundreds of officers in the streets and alleys of the Old City, all neighborhoods, and in many streets in the area, allegedly to “prevent clashes between Palestinians and the police.”
