Testimony from Gaza: A Recurring Nightmare

Buildings destroyed by Israeli strikes in the Sheja’eyeh neighborhood in Gaza
Jehad Saftawi

Death attacks once again. It’s as though our life has become a recurring nightmare. I lost my husband and four of my children during the 2008 Israeli assault on Gaza. They shelled our house, leaving me and my four girls to collect the shattered pieces of our life. I now live in Sheja’eyeh, a neighborhood in southern Gaza that has witnessed continuous attacks and shelling since the beginning of this new assault.

Once again, I stand in front of a bombed house and a shattered life. I stand amidst the death and destruction, wondering about the future of our bereaved family. Do we cheat death again this time? Or do we depart to join my husband and four other children?

Despite the pain and sorrow, the atrocities of the occupation, and the silence of the world, we remain, seeking refuge in our homeland yet again.
