Stand Up for Sussia and Against Israel’s Demolition of Palestinian Villages

On Sunday afternoon, in the middle of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Israel’s Civil Administration demolished structures built without permits in the Palestinian village of Sussia, south of Hebron. This time, it was two structures housing 21 people, 14 of them children. In addition, an outdoor kitchen and animal pen for 80 sheep and goats were destroyed.

Multiple demolitions in the occupied West Bank left 124 Palestinians homeless in a single day, 60 of them children, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said in a statement Friday. A total of 54 structures -- including 18 donor-funded structures -- were demolished on Thursday in nine different communities located in Area C, the over 60 percent of the West Bank under full Israeli military control.

Israel Ramps up Demolitions of Palestinian Structures

The Israeli military has tripled its demolitions of Palestinian-owned structures in the occupied territories over the past three months, a United Nations' report says. Figures collated by the UN's office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs (OCHA) - which operates in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem - show from an average of 50 demolitions a month in 2012-2015, the number rose to 165 since January, with 235 demolitions in February alone.

A Palestinian family tore down part of its own apartment in the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Hanina on Wednesday to avoid paying the Jerusalem municipality's demolition costs. Shireen al-Sidawi, the owner of the apartment, told Ma'an that Israel ordered the demolition of an extension that was built onto the home three years ago on the grounds it did not have the necessary construction permits.
